Nuclear New Build proposals in England and Wales – Hinkley Point
Power companies promoting the development of new nuclear power stations will select their nuclear reactor from a choice of new generation reactors that are now available. A new process, called ‘Generic Design Assessment' or GDA, allows us to assess these nuclear reactor designs before power companies make individual site applications. By getting involved at the earliest stage we can have the most influence and sort out technical issues with designers. We have received information on two types of reactor – the Westinghouse designed AP1000 and the Areva/EDF designed UK EPR.
We want your comments
We are holding a consultation on our views so far and would like people to comment on our findings as this can help inform our decision. We will carefully consider the comments received before we reach a final decision on the acceptability of the two designs.
Our consultation will last for sixteen weeks, between 28 June and 18 October 2010.
